The Weather is all Part of the Fun on Grandfather Mountain

To say that the weather in the western North Carolina Mountains is different from the rest of the south would be an understatement. While cities like Atlanta and Charlotte are sweltering with summer highs in the 90s, residents of Asheville and the surrounding areas are frequently enjoying temperatures in the comfortable 70-80 degree range. Then, as fall gives way to winter, western NC turns into the perfect place for skiing, snow tubing, or just cuddling up inside a cabin and watching the snow fall outside. There’s never a bad time to book Sugar Mountain vacation rentals, and we provide a great selection of mountain view condos and homes.

One location that has seen the mountain weather at its most extreme is Grandfather Mountain. Since 1955, the US Weather Service has maintained a reporting station near the mountain’s peak. Here are some of the records that have been set during that time:

  • The most rain in a single day fell on September 8, 2004: 11.3 inches.
  • The most rain in one month fell during September 2004: 32.3 inches.
  • The most snow in a single winter fell during the cold season of 1959-60: 129 inches.
  • The most snow in a single month fell in January 1977: 55.06 inches.
  • The most snow in a single day fell on March 16, 1993: 24 inches.
  • The highest wind speed ever recorded was 107 M.P.H., on February 11, 2008.
  • The highest temperature ever recorded was 83 degrees. This occurred on two separate days: August 22, 1983 and July 26, 2005.
  • The lowest temperature ever recorded was on January 21, 1983, when the mercury fell to a frigid -32 degrees F.
