HIGHLAND GAMES DRAW THOUSANDS TO OUR MOUNTAINS

It’s all about bagpipes and tartans this Thursday through Sunday, July 7-10 when thousands of Scotts and “would be” Scotts converge in Avery County for the 60th annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. These games enact the rich cultural traditions of Scotland with music, athletic prowess, dancing and everything ceremonial. The setting, in the shadow of the 5,946 peaks of Grandfather Mountain is not much different than the Scottish highlands 3,600 miles away.

The event begins Thursday afternoon, July 7, with a 4:30PM picnic, torch lighting ceremony and sheep herding. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are filled with competitions in traditional heavyweight Scottish athletic events; highland dancing competitions; bagpipe band parades; piping, drumming and harp competitions; sheep herding demonstrations by Scottish border collies and concerts featuring a wide variety of Celtic music.
