Sugar Mountain Resort unveiled its new Summit Express on November 14 and promptly opened the next day. Snow making is underway. The new Summit Express is a stunning six-seat, detachable, high-speed chairlift manufactured by the noted Austrian based company, Doppelmayr. On hand to celebrate the occasion were NC Governor McCrory and Doppelmayr’s CEO.
Riders on the nearly mile long ride to Sugar Mountain’s 5,300 foot peak aboard the Summit Express will enjoy cushy seats, good elbow room, comfortable foot rests and easy off- loading. Best of all, the ride is only five minutes! The Summit Express will carry 2,518 people per hour. “Our guests expect to be offered something new every year”, explains resort owner Gunther Jochl, “It’s important that we continue to develop and provide innovations with a wow factor,”
Skiers and snowboarders can check weather and slope conditions at www.skisugar.com. The Summit Express is in operation to Sugar’s peak servicing the Northridge, Switchback, Upper and Lower Flying Mile slopes. The full day session runs from 9:00 am until 4:30 pm. The half-day session begins at 12:30 and ends at 4:30 pm.
There are other changes to the lift system architecture as well. The new Little Gray chairlift, formerly known as the Summit #2 chairlift, has been shortened and will now ferry skiers and snowboarders to the top of the Easy Street Extension slope, providing access to the lower and north sides of the mountain. The new GW chairlift will transport passengers from the base of Gunther’s Way to the mountain’s peak.
The end result of this ambitious upgrade is a streamlined traffic flow, increasing the mountain’s uphill transportation capacity to 10,520 people per hour!
To compliment the new lift system, the snow making infrastructure has been upgraded by adding three fully automated snow machines and an additional variable speed, fully automated water pump.
